Réunion, an island, a majestic world, whose heart beats to the rhythm of its calderas: Cilaos, Salazie and Mafate. Mountainous basins created from the erosion and subsidence of the walls of the Piton des Neiges (the island’s highest point at 3,069 m). The mountainous inland of Réunion puts on a magical show in which its rich natural beauty plays the starring role. The calderas are astonishing "islands within the island" and offer a protected environment and grandiose landscapes.
In the past, their geographical contours provided ideal hideouts for runaway slaves. Later, its clean, healthy air, beautiful natural environment and thermal waters made it a popular destination for high society. It has now become a destination for holiday and discovery tours, associated with relaxation and recharging your batteries. Walkers, canyoning and white water sports enthusiasts will find this an exceptional spot for their favourite pastime.

From Tsilaosa, a Malagasy word meaning "place you never leave", Cilaos was, like the other calderas on the island, the preferred hiding place for the "Brown blacks", or runaway slaves. After the abolition of slavery, the "petit blanc", newly penniless, were exiled to the highlands, especially to Cilaos, and continued to live in perfect harmony with the former slaves.
